Training for Philippine Peacekeepers: Women, Peace and Security
Last May 31, 2011, The Center for Peace Education and WE ACT 1325, with support from Sulong CARHRIHL, had their first Women, Peace and Security Training for Philippine Peacekeepers. Held at the AFP Peacekeeping Operations Center in Camp O’ Donell, Capas, Tarlac, 49 soon to be deployed peacekeepers were given different lectures on Women, Peace and Security.
The group, headed by Major Rey Besa, was first introduced to the concept of peace and non-violence. Interactive workshops on Prejudice and Discrimination and Conflict Resolution were also carried out stirring the interest of the all-male contingent. Special emphasis was given on UNSCRs 1325 and 1820 providing a better understanding of women’s rights and roles in times of conflict. This knowledge is very important in their mediating practice once they get deployed to their respective country assignments.
Dr. Jasmin Nario-Galace, Center for Peace Education’s Associate Director and Frances Piscano,CPE Project Assistant, were able to simplify the discussion on critical themes making them more understandable and relevant to the peacekeepers. Anger management, mediation styles, and gender-sensitivity are some of the few learnings the participants have mentioned gaining from the experience.
The workshop is only the first in the series of trainings the Center will be conducting for UN Peacekeepers. These are all in line with the aim of CPE, WE ACT 1325 and Sulong CARHRIHL to implement the country’s National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security. The Philippines is the first country in Asia to adopt a National Action Plan on the said matter and the collaboration of government units and civil society organizations is integral for its realization.
