CARHRIHL and Peace Training for Teachers
Sorsogon City, Sorsogon – Teacher’s Dignity Coalition(TDC) Bicol Region and Sulong CARHRIHL conducted a CARHRIHL and Peace Training for Teachers last May 11 – 13, 20011 at the Sorsogon State College. Said event was attended by elementary and high school teachers as well as college professors from the region.
Day 1 of the training is focused on Situational Analysis, Teachers’ Issues and Human Rights. Starting off the day’s activity, Mr. Benjo Basas, TDC National Chairperson, introduced the advocacy points and enumerated the accomplished campaigns of the coalition, while Mr. Wilson Requez, Education and Training Officer of Sulong CARHRIHL introduced the network, highlighting its neutrality and inclusive principles for CARHRIHL and peace advocacy.
After the introductions, Mr. Wilbert Mercado, Networking Officer of Sulong CARHRIHL, facilitated a situational analysis workshop to map out realities happening in the ground. For this workshop the participating teachers were divided into groups to discuss the armed conflict situation in their area. After the discussions, the teachers concluded that Sorsogon is an armed conflict hotspot where most hostilities happen in the remote areas, much like in other provinces. Thy further stated that they see this militarization in their area as anti-development because it attracts resurgence of conflict. Mr. Basas, then took the floor to talk about the second agenda for the day – teacher’s issues. Afterwhich the last topic for the day - human dignity and human rights – was discussed.
Day 2 saw a discussion on International Humanitarian Law(IHL), CARHRIHL and peace Concepts. The discussion on the International Humanitarian Law was facilitated by Mr. Mercado through a workshop exercise. It was Mr. Requez who then tackle the topic of CARHRIHL as an agreement and as a tool for peacebuilding. A quick update on the recent result of the peace talks in the Oslo was also presented to the participants. After the day’s activities, TDC reaffirmed its stake in the cultivation of peace education as its advocacy points.
The third and final day of the training was reserved for the formulation of the participants’ action plan. The agreed plan address key issues of organizational concerns, plans for the peace work in their areas and a major event for education and peace issues.
